We learned to never approach a strange dog. Stand still they will usually leave you alone. (running and screaming may actually cause the dog to chase) When you see a dog on a leash, ask the owner, "May I pet your dog?" and if the answer is yes, first let the dog smell your hand, then gently rub, not pat, the dog's head.
