An Experiment......

Science experiment: Dipping a hand in icy water, then dipping again, with the hand between two layers of shortening.

The fat protected our Preppers from the cold because it insulated the hand like  blubber. Whales, seals and walruses all have a layer of fat called blubber to insulate their bodies from the freezing water.
